Golf gives you nothing printed on the athlete to key from. You assign the codes, and having the name list prepared is what saves the typing.
Names from across the tour carry spellings that are easy to get wrong under deadline and easy to mangle in transit. A prepared, ASCII-folded file removes both risks.
Who is playing this week is its own list. Trim the tour list to the event you are covering rather than rebuilding it from scratch.
The export is not locked to one program. The same LPGA Tour roster file loads into Photo Mechanic and into GalleryID Desktop, with identical shortcodes either way.
Edit > Settings > Set Code Replacements > Load, then pick the file. The shortcodes are live in the caption fields immediately.
Code Replacement is the name Camera Bits, Inc. gives the feature in Photo Mechanic's own documentation, which is why this file is often called a code replacement roster file.
Attach the same file as a roster and the identical shortcodes expand while you caption. Nothing about the export changes.

Golf files carry no numbers or positions, so the shortcode is yours to define. Initials and surname is a common pattern, and you set the structure when you build the file.
You choose the columns. The export is a tab-separated file, so anything that reads a tab-delimited roster can use it.
In Photo Mechanic, go to Edit > Settings > Set Code Replacements, click Load, and select the file. GalleryID Desktop attaches the same file as a roster with no change to the export.
Names are folded to US-ASCII on export so they survive Photo Mechanic and the wires without turning into replacement characters.
You assign them when building the file. There is no number to derive a code from in golf, so the structure is entirely your choice.
